Katakana is one of four writing systems used in Japanese (the others being hiragana, kanji and rōmaji).
It is used mainly for foreign names and loanwords and consists of 71 single and 36 double characters.
Each of these characters has a hiragana equivalent with the same pronunciation.
There are also about 30 extended katakana combinations representing sounds not found in native Japanese words, such as ティ (‘ti’) in パーティー (‘party’).
These extended combinations have no standard hiragana equivalents.
