The Japan Kanji Aptitude Test (“Kanken”) is a set of standardized tests primarily for native Japanese speakers, measuring kanji knowledge across twelve levels from Level 10 (beginner) to Level 1 (advanced).
The Kanken deck covers the subset taught through high school in Japan: the 2,136 jōyō kanji in levels 10 through 2.
The six study groups cover levels 10–8, 7–5, 4, 3, pre-2 and 2, with kanji ordered by BCCWJ frequency.
An extra level provides 900 additional words, for a total of 5,000 words containing 2,158 distinct kanji.
